Identifying Defective Shingles
You may have already read our blog on Discontinued Shingles, but do you know how to identify what shingles you have? Here are a few easy identifiers for Atlas Chalet and CertainTeed Shingles.
Atlas Chalet Shingles
Age
Atlas Chalet shingles were manufactured from 1999-2010, so if your house was built in that time frame, there is a good chance your builder used these defective shingles. They were once the most popular shingle used on homes in Georgia.
Keyways
Keyways are divisions between the tabs of an asphalt shingle. Atlas Chalet Shingles are 3-tab shingles with very distinct keyways, or gaps. True architectural shingles will not have keyways, there will be no gaps between the shingles. If you take a look at your roof and are able to see the distinct, 3-tab shingles with gaps in between each set, you may have Atlas Chalet shingles on your roof.
Shadow Lines
Another sign are the shadow lines. Atlas Chalet shingles have lines of dark granules at the tops of the tabs to create the illusion of shingle layering, similar to architectural shingles. These lines will be very obvious when you take a closer look at your shingles and are usually about 1 inch in depth.
Three Tabs
As we mentioned before, Atlas Chalet shingles have 3 tabs of shingles. Typical Architectural shingles will have only two tabs.
CertainTeed Horizon
CertainTeed's Horizon shingles aren't quite as distinctive as Atlas Chalet, but there are some indications you may have the faulty shingles on your roof.
Age
CertainTeed's Horizon shingles were manufactured from July 1, 1987 through 2005. CertainTeed shingles sold after 2005 are made of fiberglass, not organic material, and are not included in the lawsuit.
Name on Packaging
If your contractor left some packaging of your roofing materials behind, you may be able to tell the brand easily. The brand names included are: Hallmark Shangle, Independence Shangle, Horizon Shangle, Custom Sealdon, Custom Sealdon 30, Sealdon 20, Sealdon 25, Hearthstead, Solid Slab, Master Slab, Custom Saf-T-Lok, Saf-T-Lok, and Custom Lok 25.
Signs of Wear
Due to the organic material Horizon shingles are made of, they will begin to break down over time and will show significant signs of wear. Some of these signs include Cracking, degranulating, fishmouthing, and premature deterioration.
